Immediately after receiving my first computer in January of 2000, I hooked it up to the internet. I began to teach myself web design using various tutorials around the web. There is a vast amount of resources online for learning pretty much everything you need to know to design your own websites and I would spend countless hours reading through a lot of them. My first couple of websites were on angelfire.com and geocities.com, free hosts that don’t allow you a lot of room to do much of anything. But they helped to get me started in understanding the languages that run the web.
At this time, I entered the web under an alias. My mom was worried about online predators and the likes, so I was introduced as Braeden. Just a name I have always liked. My mom felt more secure that way and allowed me to do things online without supervision. Even once I had my own computer and paid for the internet on my own, I had grown so used to the alias that I just continued to use it.
I can’t remember the names of my first couple of websites on those free hosts, but the first time I moved off them and got my own domain and hosting was when I purchased memories-of-march.org, bought because I was born in the month of March. It became my first ever script-powered blog. I was slowly introducing myself to the world of php and mySQL scripts, where pages are created on the fly and web designing gets a whole lot easier.
I was becoming fairly advanced. I had started creating my own graphics and playing around with scripts. Learning how they worked and sometimes even how to modify certain aspects to suit my needs more. Since I had out-grown the first domain, I moved on to withoutaface.org, bought because it was part of the title for a favorite movie, The Man Without A Face.
When I’m not working on my personal website, I spend my other free time creating fansites for my favorite celebrities. I have had many over the years. Some small, some very large. My favorite part of owning a celebrity based fansite is the multimedia. I love creating episode or movie clips on the celeb. Or making screencaps of their various roles. I can’t remember all of the fansites I have had over the years, but just to name a few, some of which are still open: gilmorefan.com, ferrerafan.com, brookeandlucas.net, greenbergweb.org, roryandlogan.net, penn-badgley.com, promnightfamily.com. I have some other projects that I’d like to start as well but for now, they will remain nameless until I find the time to get them going.
My next stop was the domain eatsleepandbreathe.net, where I tended to blog about my obsession over the game of hockey. It was a short-lived domain though, only lasting about eight months before I moved on to this domain.
I am hoping that RemoveMySplinters.net will be somewhat of a final resting place for me. A place to blog about whatever suits my fancy. A place where I could finally drop my online alias and return to being myself. And a place where I can try to quench my insatiable appetite for the world of web design by continuing to play with languages, graphics and php scripts.
